About
From student tour guide to college admission officer to high school college counselor, Lauren Cook has over twenty years' experience with college admission counseling.
As a student, Lauren experienced the transformational power of higher education – both in and out of the classroom – despite little guidance with her own search at a large public high school. Her experiences have led her to a career dedicated to illuminating a clear and inviting college admission pathway for all students.
Recognizing that the landscape seems to only become more complicated each year, Lauren believes that all students deserve informed guidance on how to pursue quality higher education. Given the constraints inherent in working for any one institution, she has also been a committed volunteer for several professional organizations, serving as an advocate, collaborator, and activist to make the process more equitable for all.
Lauren’s expertise has been sought by countless college admission professionals and major media outlets across the United States. She is a Past-President of the Western Association for College Admission Counseling, part of the Fiske Guide to Colleges Counselor Advisory Group, and a founding member of the social justice college admission counseling organization ACCEPT. She holds a B.A. in American Studies from Mount Holyoke College and a M.Ed. from Northeastern University.

Bio
Lauren was born and raised in Central Ohio, a proud public school graduate prior to enrolling at Mount Holyoke College. While serving as a student tour guide, Lauren became curious about the mechanics of college admission given that her search was generally unsupported but filled with happy accidents. Shortly after graduation, she was delighted to be offered a position as an Admission Counselor at her alma mater.
Over eighteen years in selective college admission, Lauren conducted recruitment travel across the United States and Canada, established Mount Holyoke's first regional admission office in the San Francisco Bay Area, and pursued varied professional development opportunities from The Harvard Summer Institute to The White Privilege Conference. She became a trained Intergroup Dialogue facilitator, chaired the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) Communications Committee, and bounced between coasts alternately as a regional and on-campus member of the admission staff.
In 2016 Lauren transitioned to her current position as the Dean of College and Gap Year Advising at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay. Beyond providing personalized, one-on-one college counseling to the JCHS community, she also serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and the Anti-Bias and Inclusion Steering Committee. Her work extends beyond the walls of the school as a current member of the Fiske Guide to Colleges Counselor Advisory Group, the 2018-2020 University of California, Berkeley Counselor Advisory Group, and the NACAC 2019-2020 CEO Search Committee.
Lauren is also a distinguished member of the Western Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC). She joined the Executive Board in 2015 as an Assembly Delegate, representing Western in the NACAC National Assembly while also creating WACAC's first organizational profile and co-chairing the Leadership Development Institute for college admission middle managers. She entered the presidential cycle in the spring of 2018, and during that three-year commitment she co-chaired a Super Conference with record-breaking attendance, built a formal organizational rapid response plan for regional and national crises, oversaw the creation of Western's first strategic plan, and managed a complete revision and restatement of the WACAC bylaws.
Lauren's volunteer commitments have earned her the Mount Holyoke Loyalty Award and the WACAC Steve Hankins New Counselor Award. She is also delighted to periodically share her college counseling expertise as a guest on ABC7 News Bay Area. When she is not engaged in college admission work, you can find her reading, hiking, and advocating for racial justice.
Recommendations
"Lauren is a fantastic leader in our profession, and I recommend her for anything having to do with the growth and progression of college admission counseling. In particular, I appreciate Lauren's intentional approach to leadership. I worked with Lauren most in the capacity of serving with her on the board for the Western Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC) and it was no small feat that Lauren kept us on track through a variety of events and experiences. Whether it was to activate a rapid respond to students and colleagues affected by California wildfires, or laying the groundwork for a long-term strategic plan for WACAC, Lauren never ceased to amaze me that she balanced everything -- and in the capacity of a volunteer for this role. If ever there is something that needs to be done and done extremely well with a lasting impact -- I would recommend Lauren Cook."

"Lauren is phenomenal at her job. She is knowledgeable and skilled, and engages with each student on a highly individualized level. She is also extremely warm, patient, and kind, making the stressful and lengthy process of college admissions as smooth and pleasant as possible. I recall she was with me every step of the way - setting up a test prep program in our school, checking in about progress, carefully reviewing each of my admissions essays and offering detailed feedback, and guiding my parents and I through the admissions process. Lauren's skills landed me in my dream school, helping me apply for a $30,000 scholarship that enabled me to attend college. She really goes above and beyond each step of the way."

"Among Mount Holyoke students and alumnae volunteers, I never have to explain who Lauren Cook is. If you've met her, you remember her, and you like her a lot. She has the unique combination of being impressive and very approachable. I think this makes her a great spokesperson. She's credible and knowledgeable, so she earns respect immediately. But she also listens carefully, welcomes tough questions and uses her great sense of humor to put people at ease. I constantly meet high school students who remember her name and decided to apply to Mount Holyoke because of their conversations with Lauren. They think she's smart, cool, put-together and funny, and they want to be just like her."
- Mount Holyoke Alumnae Admission Volunteer
"Ms. Cook is a dedicated, knowledgeable, and sensitive college advisor. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the college process and constant changes in external requirements due to COVID-19, Ms. Cook was a rock—calm, clear, helpful, and always understanding.
When I was working on college essays and putting together lists of activities, Ms. Cook was always there to offer an outside perspective, thoughtful input, and experienced advice. She helped me understand how to shape my knowledge of myself as a person into a clear, compact application that was both authentic and well-framed.
Ms. Cook was there every step of the way, from the first, confused steps into the college world—analyzing different options, understanding what my goals and priorities were—through the confusion and complexity and finally to the joy at the end of the tunnel. She helped clear away much of the overwhelming stress and murkiness with her professionalism, care, and specificity. I am deeply grateful to Ms. Cook for the guidance and stability she provided me on my college application journey, and continue to keep her advice in mind as I move onward to college and the world."
